Electrical Safety Testing for Medical Equipment

In order to verify the safety and efficacy of their medical equipment, it is required by law and manufacturer to perform an electrical safety test on medical devices as per AS/NZS 3551:2012.

Some of our key attributes we check / measure include:

Earth Continuity Test
SafeMed conducts earth continuity testing for Class I equipment to ensure there is a clear and reliable path between all exposed metal surfaces and the power system ground.

Insulation Resistance Measurement
SafeMed performs insulation resistance tests for Class I and Class II equipment, including:

* Insulation resistance between mains parts and ground or the enclosure
* Insulation resistance between applied parts and ground or the enclosure
* Insulation resistance between applied parts and mains parts

Equipment Leakage Current Measurement
SafeMed measures earth leakage current flowing between the power supply and ground. This applies to Class I and Class II type B, BF, and CF equipment.

Earth Leakage Current Measurement
SafeMed measures leakage current flowing from the protective earth through the patient back to the protective earth conductor of the power cord. This applies specifically to Class I equipment.

Touch Current Measurement

SafeMed provides precise measurements of touch current flowing from any exposed conductive part of the enclosure to earth through a standardized measuring device. This testing is applicable to both Class I and Class II equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards and minimizing the risk of electric shock in sensitive environments.

Patient Leakage Current Testing

SafeMed offers comprehensive testing services for patient leakage current across Class I and Class II medical equipment, including Type B, BF, and CF classifications. These measurements are essential for ensuring patient safety and regulatory compliance.

  • For Type B equipment, leakage current is measured between all applied parts connected together and true earth.
  • For Type BF equipment, the test involves measuring current between applied parts serving the same function (tied together) and true earth.
  • For Type CF equipment, leakage current is assessed individually for each applied part in relation to true earth.

These procedures follow established standards and help verify that devices operate safely under normal and fault conditions.

Patient Area Body/Cardiac protected testing

Body and Cardiac Protected Installations are designed to minimize the risk of electric shock and ensure safe operation of medical devices in clinical settings.

What Are Protected Installations?

  • Body-Protected Areas
These zones include general wards, outpatient clinics, and treatment rooms where patients may come into contact with electrical equipment. Safety measures are implemented to protect against indirect contact and leakage currents.
  • Cardiac-Protected Areas
High-risk zones such as operating theatres, intensive care units, and cardiac catheter labs require enhanced protection due to the proximity of equipment to the heart. These areas demand stricter electrical isolation and monitoring systems.

Key Safety Features

Protected installations are designed in accordance with AS/NZS 3003:2018 and include:

  • Equipotential Earthing
Ensures all conductive surfaces are at the same electrical potential, reducing the risk of current flow through the body.
  • Medical-Grade RCDs (Residual Current Devices)
Typically rated at 10 mA, these devices detect and interrupt leakage currents quickly to prevent harm.
  • Line Isolation Monitors (LIMs)
Used in isolated power systems to detect faults without disconnecting power—essential in cardiac-protected areas.
  • Clearly Marked Socket Outlets
Dedicated outlets with signage to indicate protected status and prevent misuse.
  • Routine Testing and Certification
Regular inspections and testing (at least annually) ensure ongoing compliance and safety.

Why It Matters

Body and Cardiac Protected Installations are not just legal requirements—they are life-saving systems. Proper design and maintenance help:

  • Prevent electrical shock during procedures
  • Ensure uninterrupted operation of critical equipment
  • Maintain compliance with healthcare safety standards
